Our tape is now made of paper

Our new paper tape has been years in the making. Perfecting a sustainable alternative wasn’t just about replacing plastic; we needed a solution that could withstand the rigours of thousands of kilometres of shipping and cold storage without failing. After countless rounds of testing and refinement, we’ve succeeded. All Good is proud to introduce Aotearoa’s very first paper-taped banana bunches. Just as we led the way with Fairtrade fruit, we’re now pioneering the shift away from plastic tape. It’s another step in being good for the land, our growers, and your family.
The tape is recyclable, but because it’s small, it needs to be stuck onto a larger piece of cardboard before going into the recycling bin. This helps industrial recycling machines process it properly. Simple as that.

Over 2,000 people receive medical care each year

The El Guabo Medical Centre offers free check-ups, dental care, and eye tests while treating chronic issues like diabetes and respiratory illness, the first of its kind in the region.

30 schools supported across El Guabo

Fairtrade funds have built or improved classrooms, toilets, clean-water systems, and playgrounds, giving kids a safer and better education.

Environment

100,000 trees planted and toxic chemicals banned

Through Fairtrade standards, more than 120 toxic chemicals are banned from All Good banana farms, helping protect workers, their families, wildlife and surrounding ecosystems from dangerous pesticides. Beyond the farms, a long-term reforestation project has planted 100,000 trees across Ecuador’s El Oro region, restoring rainforest habitat, supporting biodiversity and creating a healthier landscape for generations to come.

Carbon Footprint

World First – leading the world on carbon footprinting

Back in 2010 we were bursting with pride to be Aotearoa’s first Fairtrade banana company. Like everything we do, it’s a combined effort between our folks in New Zealand and the growers of El Guabo. We’ve always been mindful that there are many miles on our bananas by the time they reach your cereal. We’re tackling our climate change impact with the growers, in transport and in New Zealand.

Firstly, we measured our greenhouse gas emissions and set to work to reduce them. El Guabo has a lower carbon footprint than most plantations in Ecuador and elsewhere. The higher percentage of organic production requires less chemicals, less water and less electricity.

The carbon footprint of our bananas is 0.48kg of greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of fruit. That’s less than Kiwi apples grown in your local area. It’s less than the equivalent of driving the average car two kilometres.

Experts examined our transport use, all the way from the farms in Ecuador to our retailers throughout Aotearoa. In Ecuador our growers had been measuring their on-farm carbon emissions since 2010 – they worked to the UN’s carbon measurement standards and led the global industry. We then got that double checked by independent sustainability experts.

El Guabo’s recycling centres turn soft and hard plastics into corner boards and boxes for shipments, reducing pollution and creating local jobs.

Growers

50 million total paid to growers

Through a total of $50 million paid to growers in banana sales and development funding, farmers earn a fair, stable income to invest in their future. Included within this total is $4 million in Fairtrade premiums given back directly to grower communities to build schools, medical clinics, and community centers—projects chosen and controlled entirely by the farmers themselves.
