Viva la banana!

The Kiwis who took on Big Banana

Back in 2008, three entrepreneurial Kiwis decided to change the New Zealand banana industry for good. Brothers Chris and Matt Morrison, along with Simon Coley, were passionate about ethical business (and the banana industry didn't have a great track record there). You see, most of the world's bananas come from industrial scale plantations, grown with the unnatural help of a long list of chemicals, and by farmers who are treated a lot less than fair. So, they found a place in El Guabo, Ecuador where bananas are farmed the good way.

More than $4 million for growers

The difference fair bananas make for growers

More than $4 million in Fairtrade Premiums has gone back to the El Guabo grower community. The growers (not us) decide where it goes. They've built a medical centre that sees over 2,000 people a year, with free healthcare, dental and eye care. They've improved 30 schools with classrooms, toilets, clean water and playgrounds, covered enrolment costs and provided more than 1,200 school bags each year. This isn't charity. It's what happens when farming families earn a fair, stable price and control their futures.

50 million sold

Fifty million bunches—and counting

We've sold our 50 millionth bunch in New Zealand. We could hardly have imagined it back in 2010, when we were delivering fruit from the back of Matt's car and being told Kiwis would never pay a dollar more for a bunch. Fifteen years later, you've proved otherwise - 50 million times over. Every bunch represents someone choosing fair bananas in the fruit aisle, helping make the ethical option part of the everyday shop. To every Kiwi who picked up a bunch, told a friend or came back for more: thank you. Here's to the next 50 million.
